One Step at a Time
A special friendship is woven together between a likeable boy and a girl who has only one leg. Too soon, the boy gives in to peer pressure and joins his friends who mock the disabled girl. She loses her trust in him and he loses her friendship. While full of regret, he still can’t bring himself to change the situation. Years later he finds in his heart the courage to do the right thing…

The story invites readers to initiate an internal dialogue, while experiencing a process of growth and maturation along with the characters. It provides an opportunity to examine and understand painful events from our pasts.
One Step at a Time reminds us that we can overcome grief and shame, that we possess a power deeper and stronger that we can use to rise above emotional hurdles.

There was a girl in my class who had only one leg. We were friends.
One day she told me that her parents had bought her an artificial leg, but she had never learned how to walk on it, and that’s why she always used her crutches.

“But if you will help me, maybe I’ll try to learn how to use the artificial leg,” she said.

I didn’t answer her, because I was afraid that the other kids would laugh at me.

They used to tease her all the time.
And one day they convinced me to join them.

We would run right next to her really fast and try to make her lose her balance as she walked along leaning on her crutches,

and I pretended to laugh, too, and didn’t dare tell them that she was really nice because I was too embarrassed.
